Recording Setup

The Motto

The music you produce will only be as good as the weakest link in your setup. What a great piece of musical philosophy. And indeed it is absolutely true. However, the worst thing you can do is spend dollars and dollars/pounds and pounds/euro upon euro on expensive and elaborate gear. Although the songs on this site may or may not be of top studio quality, the setup here is near perfect, and has not cost much at all, relatively speaking ;)

In any case, if you have a half-decent setup, then the quality of a song is really down to the three procedures: recording, mixing and mastering. Enough of that, lets get down to business.

The Equipment

Over the short time I've been active in home recording, I've built up quite a neat little setup. Some semi-pros spend multiple thousands on gear, software, studio and so on, but you can get extremely decent results with just a few basics. My setup consists of the following:

- Ibanez electro-acoustic AEG10 guitarblue guitarYamaha guitar
- Yamaha FG-420 acoustic guitar
- Career electric guitar (standard strat copy)
- Peavey RAGE 158 amp
- Casio keyboard
- AKG C2000B condensor microphone
- Beyerdynamic TG-X58 dynamic microphone
- Hoontech ADC&DAC2000 converter for PC
- Hewlett P Pavillion PC, 1GHZ (CD burner etc)
- N-track multitracking software
- Cool Edit 2000 Audio software
- Tambourine, bongos, and the rest...

And I have to say that I am delighted with all the above equipment... and I'm not being paid anything to say that either! Take a look at what my setup looks like:

studio This shows you the "orderly" area in which I work :)
I've recently moved the stereo into this room to use it for mixing, as I previously used headphones (the PC speakers in the next photo are obviously NOT suitable!)
And here is my workstation. Maybe someday I'll have an audio-dedicated PC, but for the time being this is easily good enough (better in fact) for my needs. The screen actually shows the software I use for designing my CD booklets... Computer
Guitars & Mic's Here are my three guitars. Not a great picture, I know, but at least it proves I keep them on stands! That's my condensor mic in the foreground, looking disproportionately gigantic...
And here is a closer view of two of my guitars. I bought the Yamaha acoustic second hand in Wales, off a guy who played in a beatles cover band. The electric was also bought second hand, off my current landlords' daughter. And thats a plectrum, not a raspberry gumdrop. Guitars
